We all are creative beings, especially as children. Remember how happy you were showing off a picture you drew, a building you made of building bricks or some playdoh creation.  

So why do so many of us “forget” about it as adults and find only time for routine, TV, consumerism and work?

Is Perfectionism getting in Your Way?

Sometimes it is perfectionism getting in our way. Remember, as children, things didn’t have to be perfect to be fun and engaging.

But over time, more and more was expected from us, and sometimes less than perfect creations are devalued by “adults”.

Even when we try something new, we expect to be perfect at it immediately – or we don’t even want to try it. Fear of rejection and criticism has replaced the fun of creating.

Why “Just” Playing And Hobbies Aren’t A Waste Of Time

We know that playing is good for young children. We encourage them to play, solve fun puzzles, and use their imagination. It’s an important part of growing up and learning to think for themselves. It’s also a great way to encourage creative thinking.

But kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from playing, exploring new things and spending time on hobbies. There is really no fixed age when you can’t be a kid anymore. We benefit at any age from having fun creating things, exploring new things, but we need to let go of the need that everything has to be perfect.

Society often tries to tell us that taking time to play, craft, play a sport, learn a language, play an instrument, and other ways of having fun by ourself or with others is a waste of time for adults.

Taking the time to have fun and doing something completely different from what you do for work is essential for mental health.

We need lots of different ideas and experiences to give our minds something to work with. Playing is the really the perfect way to do that. Hey, there is the perfection, if you really want it!

The hobbies you have may be very different from your day job, and that’s a good thing. They help your brain grow, make new connections and even new brain cells, so you can come up with creative ideas in everyday life when you need to.

To get better at creative thinking, make time for hobbies and play. Come back to some of the things you enjoyed before you decided you didn’t have time for hobbies anymore.

Try something new and see if you like it. 

Find some enjoyable things to do in your spare time. This will be time much better spent than catching up on work after hours or flopping down in front of the TV.

Don’t pick a hobby just because it seems particularly challenging or difficult to learn. Pick something that seems like fun. Take the pressure off of yourself.

Give your mind a rest. A hobby or even spending a couple of hours playing a board game or goofing off with the kids isn’t a waste of time. It’s a great way to give your thinking mind a rest and create some very different connections in your brain.

And the fact that you’re having fun and are relaxing is an added bonus.

That will help to make you feel more positive overall.

And in the end, you’ll come back to work the next day in a much better frame of mind, more rested, and with a mind bursting full of creative ideas. Try and it and see for yourself. Pick up those favorite hobbies again, go play and don’t be afraid to try something new.

Don’t be afraid to sometimes goof off and do something that others may think is weird or crazy.

Creative people often have been deemed “insane” or as we nowadays say “mentally ill” by so-called “normal people”. Famous artist may have been labeled as “bipolar” or “major depression” or “anxious” nowadays.

Who Or What Is “Normal” Anyway?

Normal is a statistic. An average. A setting on the dryer, as my mentor and teacher Dr. Daniel Amen says. A city in Illinois.

Don’t settle for normal, for average. Dare to be individual, special, “ab-normal”, at least sometimes. Get out there, get creative, dare to do something you never done before, something  “crazy and fun”.

As long as you don’t completely lose touch with reality, and what you are doing doesn’t hurt others or yourself, it’s okay.

This is true in creativity as well as in life generally and especially for people that tend to be depressed or anxious like us. We tend to overthink.
