A Beautiful Life with a Case of Schizophrenia – with Dale Walsh

A case of schizophrenia affects more than just one person.

If you or a loved one is affected by Schizophrenia or another psychotic mental illness, watch or listen to this show.

Dr. Christine Sauer and Dale Walsh are talking about Dale’s experiences of living a full life with Schizophrenia for 47 years.

Hear about his struggles and how he now helps families of people with schizophrenia and other psychotic mental disorders as a mental health coach to navigate the system and help them deal better with this potentially devastating illness.

This article is educational and reflective in nature and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Psychiatric medications should never be stopped abruptly or changed without guidance from a qualified healthcare professional familiar with your individual medical history.

We are talking about how schizophrenia develops, what schizophrenia symptoms are, how schizophrenia is caused, negative and positive symptoms, how schizophrenia is treated and more…

Dale embodies hope for those affected as well as practical help to create a full and meaningful, even a beautiful life in spite – or just because of – mental illness.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that for many centuries has been mistreated: People with serious mental illness, especially when "behaving in a weird way", or when displaying self-harm or violence to others, were either executed or  more or less humanely or confined in prison-like institutions.

At that time this was not much better than a cave with locked doors and “bread and water” and sometimes some basic food. Often, people were starving to death or dying from infectious diseases under these conditions.

“Treatment” consisted of trepanation (cutting a hole in the skull to let the “evil spirits” out) or exorcism procedures. Many people did not survive these procedures.

Early physicians and healers who focused on mental disorders tried to describe and classify them, and did so often very well.

They established “asylums”, houses where mentally ill or “misfits” for society were housed and cared for as best as was possible then. “Treatment” attempts involved procedures that we from our perspective would view as cruel and barbaric, like long-time immersion in cold water baths and others.

Fortunately, in this day and age, modern psychiatry, psychology and mental health coaching as well as peer support has changed the fate of people afflicted by this disease. Dale Walsh exemplifies a good life lived with schizophrenia.
